Sean Elliott, Senior Editor, iFMagazine brings us this blast from the past . .
In 1983 Kenneth Johnson, already well known in genre television for shows like THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE BIONIC WOMAN, gave NBC a hit mini-series called V that for a long period of time had the highest ratings of any TV mini-series. V would go on to spawn a less successful sequel mini-series V: THE FINAL BATTLE and then V: THE SERIES which only lasted one season.
The original V written and directed by Johnson focused on invading alien reptiles masquerading as humans, but it carried a message about totalitarian governments, resistance, and discrimination and also serves as something of a commentary on the Nazi movement of World War II.
It seems only fitting that we would start with this – The X-Files will come to theaters on July 25, 2008 as Mulder and Scully once again battle for humankind’s salvation. We enter that dark place, where we are nothing and men in smoky rooms decide our fates – and give us to the aliens – lock, stock and barrel.
But, nothing is as it appears, and we can delight in the non-caped, but coated, FBI badge wielding heroes who believe and are frightened silly about what they’ve found.

Finally, the fate of part of the Cylon fleet revealed; is Baltar Jesus Christ?
Well, after last week’s abysmal talking heads episode it was nice to see BSG get back on track and if people were yelling at each other at least it was for better reasons than Starbuck has gone crazy again.
‘Faith’ finally picked up the thread from weeks ago involving the fate of the Cylon basestar that was attacked and almost destroyed in the first crushing battle of the Cylon civil war. This episode has some stunning visuals as the Colonial Raptor flies amidst the wreckage of the fight and homes in on the injured and limping basestar.
Eric Stoltz (SCI FI Channel’s Triangle) has signed on to star opposite Esai Morales in SCI FI’s two-hour Battlestar Galactica prequel pilot Caprica, while Frances Fisher has been tapped for an eight-episode arc on Eureka, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Alessandra Toressani also has come aboard the NBC Universal Cable Studios-produced Caprica. Stoltz will play Daniel Graystone, a wealthy computer engineer who, after an emotionally crippling family tragedy, uses his technological wizardry to forever change the future of Caprica. Toressani plays Daniel’s daughter, Zoe.
In Eureka, Fisher will play Samantha Thorne, aka “the Fixer,” a corporate titan who is brought in to clean up Global Dynamics. Eureka kicks off its third season July 29.
Product Description: It’s the same small town but the hidden secrets are even bigger in the city of Eureka in Season 2 of this mysteriously-surreal and quirky series.
Battlestar Galactica star Tricia Helfer and her rescued cat, Mr. Nix, appear in a new ad for PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, urging cat owners to care properly for their animals.
The ad plays on Helfer’s character, the murderous Cylon Number Six, and asks people to “Be an Angel for Animals.”
“Your cats depend on you,” Helfer says in the ad. “Play with them, clean their litterbox daily, never leave them outside unattended, and always make sure they have clean water and a cozy spot for gazing out at the great outdoors. Most importantly, be sure to show them love and affection every day.” PETA also urges cat owners to get their animals spayed or neutered.
PETA quoted Helfer, who has six cats, as saying, “Number Six would not be very kind to somebody who abuses animals. She would probably … do to them what they were doing to the animals.”
The 24th annual Trek Fest is a small-town festival with a Star Trek theme. Riverside, Iowa is known worldwide as the Future Birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk – the character played by William Shatner on the original 1960’s Star Trek TV series.
The Riverside Area Community Club (RACC) is pleased to announce Walter Koenig (Chekov character on the original Star Trek TV series) will beam into Riverside, Iowa on June 27th & 28th for the 24th annual Trek Fest. Koenig will act as the Grand Marshall in the town parade (10 AM Saturday morning) and judge a costume contest and sign autographs.
RACC president, Carol Riggan, said, “We are thrilled to have Mr. Koenig this year. The Voyage Home – Riverside History Center just opened and Mr Koenig will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday the 27th at 7pm. One exhibit in the museum will feature photos, books and various other memorabilia as a tribute to Walter Koenig.”
Riverside, Iowa is known worldwide as the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. In 2004, William Shatner (who played Kirk) came to town and filmed a Spike TV reality show called “Invasion Iowa.” Shatner tricked the town into thinking he was filming a movie, but was really filming the town’s reaction to the craziness of Hollywood. Scotty Riggan (Carol’s husband) appeared in the show as Shatner’s personal assistant. Scotty will carry on this tradition for Mr. Koenig working as his personal assistant during his stay in Iowa.
Scotty said, “Working with Mr Shatner was a thrill of a lifetime and it will be an honor to work with Mr. Koenig – and future celebrities we invite each year.”
Trek Fest’s 2008 theme is called Bread and Circuses, a second season episode title of Star Trek. A variety of family activities are planned including a demolition derby, a garden tractor pull, carnival rides, live music, costume contest, a Sci-Fi vendor area and much more. This is a small-town fair with a Sci-Fi flair. Money raised by RACC is used to help out the community such as academic scholarships. RACC also sponsors special projects like new playground equipment.
Gaeta: “So now the Cylons want us to rescue them. That’s novel.”
This week, the Battlestar Galactica production of “Mutiny on the Bounty.”
Come on. It was inevitable even before Starbuck brought Leoben on board and took him to her quarters. Too many of the crew of the poop ship Demetrius suspected Starbuck of not coming back *right*. She actually looked nuts, too. Stringy hair, questionable hygiene, crazed stare, not to mention the paint. At one point, she said, “I know that I can find that sound again.” Was she talking about “All Along the Watchtower”? Maybe Starbuck really is the Final Cylon.
I think it’s fascinating, considering what they’ve done to each other in the past, that Starbuck and Leoben are becoming allies. I love Leoben, probably because he loves Starbuck. He thinks she’s an “angel blazing with the light of God” who will lead them home. He uses Cylon projecting to translate her blows into caresses. (Oh, my. Am I picking up a Buffy/Spike vibe?) I thought during their scene together that Leoben might have known what Anders was. Or maybe Leoben just picked up on the fact that Anders was a receptive audience.
Even though Gaius has lied and prevaricated and played a part in the past, I’m convinced that he is now telling the absolute truth. Wearing a purple robe and looking more like a royal lunatic than a prophet, he somehow managed to rope in Tyrol. At first, Tyrol seemed a lot calmer, like he had made an internal decision but hadn’t acted on it yet, and I think he had decided to kill himself. The last thing I expected was for Tyrol to become a Gaius convert, but I guess he was probably prime for some sort of conversion. Tory told Gaius that no one of consequence was following him. That may have just changed. Tyrol, we may recall, was a union organizer and leader of the people.
I’ve been trying to figure out where season four is going. You’re probably all way ahead of me and I know I’ve brought it up before, but the undercurrents and plot threads all seem to point in one particular direction: human and cylon coming together, with a common religion and a common destiny. It seems like they can’t survive apart any more. Leoben and Starbuck and Gaius all apparently feel this coming, while Cavil and Adama and Roslin do not. The old guard versus the new, perhaps?
Bits and pieces:
This week’s survivor number: 39,676.
One more than last week. I’m confused. Was that Leoben? Are the
Cylons counting as survivors now?
Good thing Helo was second
in command, or it could have turned into utter chaos. (I guess it
still could, since this was just part one.) Helo also dealt pretty with
being caught between Starbuck and Athena. No small thing.
Tyrol shaved his head, which can be construed as a sign of mourning. For Tyrol, probably more of a sign of confusion.
Gaius has a secret radio ministry. Except that Roslin knows all about it, and doesn’t care… according to Tory.
A commercial clip shown during the episode featured Michael
Trucco saying that in his opinion, Anders loves Starbuck no matter what
she does to him, and his biggest fear isn’t that others will find out
what he is — it’s that *she* will.
Quotes:
Tory: “We don’t know why these things happen. God does.”
Starbuck: “I swear to God. This is not a dream. It’s real.” Did she say “God”, not Gods”?
Anders: “What do you want from Kara?” Leoben: “The same thing I’ve always wanted. For her to understand her destiny.”
Tyrol:
“Tory’s got it in her head that we can be the salvation of the human race. All I know is, if there is a god, he’s laughing his ass off.” Is that what is going on with Tory? I swear, I have no idea what she’s trying to do.
Leoben: “You need to go to her, Kara. The Hybrid. She’ll tell you things.” Huh.

Actually the first thing I thought of was the character in Full Metal Jacket (Private Pyle) who went crazy and fragged his commanding officer then killed himself. Is Tyrol just crazy or has he figured something out and now has a plan. That brings me to why the final five were not to be talked about. Were they more chaotic/emotional/human than the Cylons were comfortable with? Also, can they be resurrected?

It’s hard to believe that Stargate Atlantis’ fifth season will culminate in the airing of the show’s 100th episode. The Stargate franchise’s first spin-off is now no longer a fledgling production – it has well and truly come of age. Season five will be the second year that the executive producing and writing partnership of Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie have acted as show-runners on the series. Despite being rushed off his feet as production on the season gets underway, Mallozzi was happy to spill a few secrets about what fans have to look forward to in this, the first of our two-part chat.
How is production on season five so far?
We’re starting to get into it. It’s always tough at the beginning, but it’s fun. We’ve got [Robert] Picardo in, and he injects a new variable to the show. New variables are always interesting after this many years, not just of Atlantis but Stargate in general. It’s always interesting to make it different and mix things up.
How many scripts do you have in hand so far?
We have four finished scripts. We have a first draft of another, which is one that Carl [Binder] just handed in, and Brad [Wright]’s working on episode six which he should have for Monday. I’m working on episode seven. I’m just agonising over this last scene! Then beyond that, Carl’s already started on script number eight and we’re about to discuss script number nine, which is going to be Alan [McCullough]’s. We’ve already broken the mid-season two-parter, which will see Michael Shanks guesting as Daniel Jackson, and Martin [Gero]’s going to be writing that one. We kind of already know what episodes 19 and 20 are going to be. So we’ve got some scripts in hand but also a lot of stories in play at this point.
WASHINGTON – Now in the midst of its fourth and final season, SciFi’s “Battlestar Galactica” – a tale of humans nearly destroyed by a race of machines called Cylons – is as bleak, allegorical, and groundbreaking as ever. And the stakes seem especially high, as four humans turn out to be sleeper Cylons, a pilot named Starbuck returns from the dead, and Admiral Adama, the gruff commander played by Edward James Olmos, tries more desperately than ever to find a mythical place called Earth. We caught up with Olmos on the night he received an award from CINE, an organization that promotes excellence in video and film.
