Review: Stargate: “Continuum”

by John K. of Critical Myth

The first direct-to-DVD “Stargate” film, “The Ark of Truth”, was burdened with the task of condensing a season’s worth of resolution to the Ori arc in the space of about 90 minutes.  The writers did well enough under the circumstances, but it was clear that the plot was the overriding consideration. Stargate – Continuum also seeks to resolve a lingering plot thread from the final season of “Stargate SG-1”, but generally speaking, the writers had more freedom with the story.

In essence, the plot boils down to this: Ba’al, the last of the System Lords, has finally been captured (and we shall never speak of the Ba’al clones again).  In a last ditch effort to reverse his fortunes, Ba’al uses a time machine to prevent the relocation of the original stargate from Giza in the late 1930s.  Jackson, Carter, and Mitchell are in the middle of gate transit when this happens, so they retain their memories of the original timeline when they arrive in the altered reality.  Hilarity ensues.

Play 20Q Star Trek Online

20Q™ Star Trek is the newest installment of 20Q™ (an A.I. twenty questions game). Next year Mattel will release a handheld version of this game, but right now, in an effort to make the game smarter, 20Q™ Star Trek is available to play online. The more Star Trek fans and experts who play the online version, the smarter the game will become.

Aside from giving Star Trek fans an outlet for sharpening their Star Trek knowledge, the game is fun to play, and is amazingly good at guessing what you’re thinking. See if you know more about Star Trek than 20Q does: http://www.20q.net/startrek/

Squidoo Lenses and Science Fiction

Squidoo Cash machine

Building a Squidoo lens can both fun and profitable if you know how. I recently began to build Squidoo lenses of my shorter fan fiction stories, made a few bucks, but more importantly gotten a lot of new traffic who are interested in science fiction and fantasy to both Science Fiction Buzz and our blog. What I like about Squidoo lenses is that if you take some of your shorter fan fiction pieces, it’s extremely easy to convert them into Squidoo lenses.

Running an archive called Worlds Of Wonder, I am always on the outlook for new ways to get fan fiction readers to find it and for fan fiction writers to read it. Worlds Of Wonder has been sitting dormant since I got sick and my mom got sick and died. Please note: We are revamping Worlds of Wonder into a forum board where stories can be posted as well as news and commentary. We will be using Squidoo fan fics to build traffic to the new Worlds of Wonder site once it’s done in about 2 weeks.  I’ve been looking for a way to revitalize the board, so I’ve started making Squidoo lenses with links to the archive. I’ve been looking for a way to revitalize the lens, so I’ve started making Squidoo lenses with links to the archive.

I came across a great ebook that had helped a great deal in making my lenses more engaging and easy to read. The book is called Squidoo Cash Machine and despite it’s somewhat hyped name, it is a truly wonderful ebook on how to make Squidoo lenses. Squidoo is owned by Google, so if you are trying to get the word out about your website, building a couple Squidoo lenses is the way to go.

Review: Stargate Atlantis 5.3: “Blood Ties”

by John K., Critical Myth

If it’s a character-based episode early in a season of “Stargate Atlantis”, then it’s a good guess that it’s a Ronon-centric episode. Looking back on the past few seasons, this is practically a matter of inevitability. I recall a similar thing happening to the character of B’Elanna on “Star Trek: Voyager”. The writers would incrementally advance her personal character arc in an early episode of every season, and once that was out of the way, she basically fulfilled her function within the ensemble without much variation.

By Tonia Jordan

SFB Guest Author

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s second novel, The Sirens of Titan, tells the story of Malachi Constant, the richest man in 22nd century America, and Winston Rumfoord, a wealthy man stuck in something called a chrono-synclastic infundibulum. Rumfoord is able to see the past, present and future (and experience them) all at once. Rumfoord uses his knowledge to manipulate many events, using Constant as one of his key players. The Sirens of Titan takes readers through time and space, visiting several outerspace locations, including Mars, Mercury, and Saturn’s moon, Titan.

Stargate Continuum Review

From SciFi Pulse:  By Ian M. Cullen

Synopsis: An elite military unit (SG-1) must flee back to Earth when two members of their team inexplicably disappear into thin air. But they return to a world in which the Stargate – an Ancient device which allows them to travel to hundreds of planets – was never discovered, and their own history has been erased. Now they must convince a dubious government and military that the timeline was altered by a powerful Alien enemy (Ba’al) in order to conquer Earth, and time is not on their side.

Singularity by Bill DeSmedt

I’ve just finished listening to Bill DeSmedt’s Singularity and thought I’d share. You can listen to the book over at Podiobooks.com. You don’t gotta have an MP3 player to hear the story. You can listen to it right on your computer.
On June 30, 1908, there was a massive explosion near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River. It was called the Tunguska Event. The explosion felled an estimated 80 million trees over 830 square miles. Yes, it was a big boom. Against this back drop, Bill DeSmedt’s Singularity weaves a present day tale of an astrophysicist, a rookie agent and an analyst who unearth a scheme to capture the submicroscopic black hole that caused the Tunguska Event and use its awesome power to transform the world. If you enjoy Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton you will dig this taut, fast-paced thriller. It is well read by the author – voices and all with plausible near future science and technology.
