What Urban Fantasy Tells Us About the Future [Urban Fantasy]

Welcome back!

Since we launched in January, io9 has steadfastly covered only science fiction, futurism, and science. We’ve had arguments with you over what this means, and occasionally we’ve covered borderline-fantasy tales like Hellboy and Ekaterina Sedia’s novel The Alchemy of Stone .

A Retro 70s Oedipal Robot Explosion Wet Dream, Yeah! [Life On Mars Recap]

Here’s Exhibit A for why I like the new Life On Mars series way more than it deserves. The time-stranded cop show just goes way, way over the top, as you can see in this bizarre acid trip. Sam Tyler doesn’t just have naughty thoughts about his own mom — he also sees the Vietnam war, bizarre kinky sex acts and his boss dressed as a gangster

Why I Fell In Love With Karen Traviss’ Clones [Star Wars]

When the Star Wars saga started delving more into the grim ‘n’ nasty Clone Wars era, I wasn’t that thrilled. I know, some bad stuff happened between the big fight scene at the end of Attack Of The Clones and the big fight scene at the start of Revenge Of The Sith — but I wasn’t sure I needed to know much more than the comics and Tartakovsky cartoons had shown me. But that was before I got my hands on Karen Traviss’ superb Republic Commando novels, plus her novelization of the Clone Wars movie.

Smell My Sun! [Science Art Gone Mad]

What does the sun smell like? This seemingly insoluble question faced Brisbane artists David Haines and Joyce Hinterding, as they developed their new art installation Earthstar, which promised you would “see, hear and smell the sun.” Seeing and hearing was no problem: They married time-lapse photography, using special filters, with a recording of radio signals from the sun, from a special antenna. But smelling?

Survivalist Blogger Prepares You for the Coming Apocalypse [Post-apocalyptic Survival]

Armageddon comes in many forms, from nuclear disaster to social and economic collapse, and a savvy survivalist must be ready for it all. Enter blogger Jim Rawles, who offers tips and tools to get you through any brand of disaster. Rawles, a former US Army Intelligence officer, believes that most first worlders’ intellectual detachment from their resources sets them up for failure in the event of a crisis: “A huge segment of the population doesn’t even stop to think of where the water comes from when they turn on the tap, or where the electricity comes from when they flip a switch,” Rawles says.
