Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January — but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise.
After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis movie will be sold as a home-video title by producer MGM, Sci Fi told Multichannel News on Wednesday.
MGM this year released two financially successful straight-to-DVD movies made after progenitor series Stargate SG-1 ended a 10-year run of first-run cable episodes on Sci Fi. MGM and the show producers are scheduled to make more in DVDs in future. A movie franchise is also envisioned for Stargate Atlantis.

If it’s a character-based episode early in a season of “Stargate Atlantis”, then it’s a good guess that it’s a Ronon-centric episode. Looking back on the past few seasons, this is practically a matter of inevitability. I recall a similar thing happening to the character of B’Elanna on “Star Trek: Voyager”. The writers would incrementally advance her personal character arc in an early episode of every season, and once that was out of the way, she basically fulfilled her function within the ensemble without much variation. Here’s the latest from the Stargate Atlantis world:
Stargate Atlantis‘ fifth season may undergo a schedule change. Originally slated to return in the fall of 2008, Atlantis’ premiere schedule has reportedly been moved back due to the writer’s strike affecting Battlestar Galactica. So, in a nutshell, we will get Stargate Atlantis through the summer, and the end of Battlestar Galactica sometime in 2009.
Executive producer, Joseph Mallozzi, reported that the decision on the Season Five premiere date rests with Sci Fi Channel. In his blog he further states, “However, I’m hopeful that fans won’t have to wait until the fall to see the resolution of our Season Four cliffhanger.”
With only half of the Battlestar Galactica episodes completed due to the strike, it would be impossible to play the entire 20 episodes and a decision was made to hold the ending of BSG until 2009. This leaves the network with a problem, and it appears they are deciding to have Stargate Atlantis fill the void over the summer months. Because the strike took place during Stargate Atlantis’s normal hiatus period and writers were still able to work on scripts for the show. When the strike ended Atlantis had already begun filming.
This is not set in stone with Eureka another possibility for the summer months. Apparently, it missed sidesteped the writers strike due to its production schedule and would be ready to go as well.
So, what does this all mean? Well, if Stargate Atlantis premieres early, fans will get the answers to the fate of Sheppard, McKay and Teyla sooner than expected, but will have to wait until January 2009 for the show to return. We would then have both Stargate and Battlestar on at the same time which happened once before.
It was a great way to spend Friday night, and with the fall months being hectic in terms of premieres, my Friday nights could be tied up anyway. But, this is just my opinion.
Carl said Quarantine was a group effort that sprang out of the necessity to make a less expensive episode. Why less expensive, you ask? Well, you see, we had just blown our budget making the amazing VFX sequences for Be All My Sins, and we had to pare back or we would have gone way over budget for the season. So they had to come up with what we call a “bottle episode” – existing sets only, no guest stars. But, as is usually the case, these types of episodes end up relying on wonderful character moments, and Quarantine is no exception.
So the writers sat around, and someone (some say it was Joe Mallozzi, others say it was Martin Gero) came up with the idea that the city locks down and everybody is quarantined in various rooms. Perfect bottle episode. Once that was decided, all that was left was to figure out which characters are trapped with which characters, and what the story line for each “pairing” would be.
I won’t let the cat out of the bag too much, but I will tell you that Carl’s favorite pairing was McKay and Katie Brown, because McKay could be vocal about his nihilistic view of life, which mirrors Carl’s own world view. That reminds me of a study I learned about in college: psychologists have actually proven that pessimists have a more realistic view of the world than optimists… Turns out it’s the positive, happy people that are deluded.
Mitch Pileggi returns in the role as the caustic Colonel Steven Caldwell, commander of the Earth battlecruiser, Daedalus as Stargate Atlantis, Season Four kicks off in January.
Caldwell was originally introduced in season two, to stir things up for the Atlantis crew and provide a little extra conflict for the characters. Season three’s “Echoes” was the last time viewers saw the straight-laced Colonel. Now he’s back appearing alongside Colonel Abe Ellis (played by actor Michael Beach) in the climactic “Be All My Sins Remember’d.”

Rachel Luttrell’s appearance on Entertainment Tonight. Found this over at her official site, which also looks very nice. It has her bio, background and projects, although it stops with A Dog’s Breakfast. Probably a good place to bookmark for Luttrell News, though.
SciFi Channel put on an ad for the second half of season 4 of Stargate Atlantis. It’s right below, and opening the video will expose to a TON of spoilers, so you’ve been warned. Wraithfodder pointed her digital camera at the television, so don’t expect the usual level of quality. We are a dedicated lot, aren’t we.
